Who We Are

Building on a Legacy
of California Timber

Building on the Schmidbauer Group's legacy in California's timber industry, Mad River Mass Timber (MRMT) represents the first vertically integrated mass timber manufacturer in California.

With a vertically integrated supply chain and deep regional expertise, MRMT delivers efficient, reliable, and customized mass timber solutions. Whether supplying raw DLT billets or fully prefabricated timber packages, we look forward to working with you on your next mass timber project — creating a story that flows back to your local forest and community.

Locally sourced timber is shaping a more sustainable, resilient future. After an extensive R&D effort, we have found Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) to be the mass timber product that best meets the criteria for California's specific environmental and economic challenges.

The All-Wood Alternative

What is Dowel
Laminated Timber?

Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) is a mass timber product made entirely of wood, using hardwood dowels to fasten layers of dimensional lumber together — eliminating the need for adhesives or metal fasteners.

This all-wood construction enhances sustainability, improves indoor air quality, and allows utilization of a greater variety of wood species and grades than adhesive-bonded products, supporting diverse forest management outcomes.

MRMT's products meet the criteria for materials derived from forest stewardship that enrich the land for future generations, utilize wood fiber practically and efficiently, meet future market demands for low-carbon construction, and promote the health and well-being of end users.

Where Our Wood Comes From

Full Traceability:
Forest to Finished Panel

At Mad River Mass Timber, we provide full traceability from forest to finished DLT panels through our vertical integration with Schmidbauer sawmills. Unlike many mass timber manufacturers that rely on third-party suppliers, our direct control over fiber sourcing guarantees supply chain stability, sustainability, and transparency.

We source timber from sustainably managed forests, including National Forests, Tribal lands, and forest health projects throughout Northern California, supporting wildfire mitigation and long-term forest stewardship.

This commitment ensures our products meet the highest standards for sustainable building certifications, carbon reporting, and responsible material sourcing.

California's Mass Timber Solution

Built for California's Forest
Health & Climate Goals

California's shift toward low-carbon construction will require materials that support wildfire resilience and sustainability. Mass timber, particularly Dowel Laminated Timber, offers superior fire and seismic performance while reducing reliance on steel and concrete.

This aligns with AB 2446, California's initiative to cut embodied carbon in construction by 40% by 2035 — ensuring a sustainable, low-impact future for the state's growth.

California faces a severe forest health crisis, with overgrown forests creating excessive fuel loads and contributing to catastrophic wildfires. Forest health is directly linked to the health of our watersheds. Active forest management — including thinning treatments — is necessary to restore ecological balance. MRMT's local timber sourcing aligns with the state's forest management goals by utilizing small-diameter timber from forest management activities across California.

  • Derived from forest stewardship that enriches the land for future generations
  • Utilizes wood fiber practically and efficiently, including small-diameter material
  • Meets future market demands for low-carbon construction under AB 2446
  • Aligns with the region's tree species and processing infrastructure
  • Promotes the health and well-being of building occupants

AB 2446 — Embodied Carbon Timeline

California is leading the nation in reducing embodied carbon in construction. MRMT DLT helps project teams meet these requirements.

2025 CARB finalizes embodied carbon framework and lifecycle assessment methodology
2026 Construction industry emissions baseline established statewide
2030 Targeted 20% reduction in GHG intensity of building materials
2035 Targeted 40% reduction in GHG intensity of building materials
